Reading Contemporary Beijing Lives

The Reading Contemporary Beijing Lives course will do a close reading of selected stories from the column Beijing Lights, by Huang Chenkuang, published between 2019 and 2021 online by the Beijing-based literary arts collective Spittoon. Each story gives voice to a Beijing resident, including many marginalized citizens. Participating teachers will gain insight into the social, historical and cultural forces influencing the young and not-so-young as they go about their daily lives in the Chinese capital.

  • Secondary teachers nationwide are invited to apply. Stories are published in both English and Chinese language. Admission is selective, and priority will be given to social studies, literature, language and humanities; contract teachers whose required curriculum includes modern and contemporary China; and teachers who are not enrolling in another concurrent NCTA online seminar.
