Japan Through Children’s Literature: Children’s Lives in Mid-20th Century Japan

This program explores children’s lives in Japan from the 1940s to 1960s through Freeman Book Award 2023 Of Note children’s literature. Participants will read and discussYukie’s Island: My Family’s World War II Story by Yukie Kimura et. al, Kozo the Sparrow by Allen Say, and The Story of Mai and the Missing Melon by Sonoko Sakai. The course covers diverse geographic settings, historical contexts, and cultural aspects such as school life, architecture, food, and classic stories. Discussions will focus on classroom applications for language arts and social studies. Includes two live webinars featuring Kōdo Kimura and Sonoko Sakai.
