This no-cost, five-week course will focus on the history of modern China through the lens of films that are produced in China on a number of topics such as cinematic presentation of history, aesthetic responses to the chaos in Chinese society created by war and revolution, issues of gender, body, identity, modernity and nationalism, as well as cross-cultural internationalism. Specifically, this course focuses on films directed by ZHANG Yimou (张艺谋), over a span of decades. This course will be 100% online with weekly readings, discussion postings and supplemental materials. Whether you are new to these topics, or already well versed, there is something for everyone.
