Japan and the World in the Age of Shogun

Join NCTA and Thomas Conlan, Professor of East Asian Studies and History, Princeton University, for a workshop on the the life of William Adams, the Englishman on which the famous Shogun novel and films are based. The half-day session will provide historical context and suggest ways to teach his story in class. Three talks include, "Understanding Japan in the Sixteenth Century: The Warrior Culture of Japan, "East Asian Diplomacy 1280-1600: Before and After the Arrival of Europe" and "How to teach the story of William Adams (John Blackthorne)" with built in time for questions and discussion.
