Asian Topic Discussion Series: Tiananmen Massacre of 1989

Join Professor Andy Nathan for a discussion on the Tiananmen Massacre. Tiananmen, “The Gate of Heavenly Peace," refers to the gate to the Imperial Palace in Beijing, in front of which lies a huge public square - the site of rallies, memorials, and protests since the establishment of the People's Republic of China (PRC) in 1949. In the spring of 1989, Chinese students and workers occupied Beijing's Tiananmen Square, staging the largest nonviolent political protest in China's history. The movement ended with the government's crackdown and the Beijing massacre of June 4.
