The “classical” period in Japanese history is as essential to understanding Japanese and East Asian history as is the “classical” period of Greece to Greek and Western history – even though the dates of this period in Japanese history (552-1185 CE) come after what is conventionally considered the “classical period in world history” – challenging our very Western sense of historical chronology. Buddhism, a writing system, and the Confucian model of social and political organization are introduced to Japan, and c. 1000 CE, a woman writes what is reputed to be the first novel in the world, The Tale of Genji.
