Teaching the Impact of Japan’s Invasion of Manchuria: The Lin Family Shop

Explore the Japanese invasion of Manchuria in the 1930s through discussions of Mao Dun’s story “The Shop of the Lin Family” (1932) and the film it inspired, directed by Shui Hua (1959). Our moderator for this film and literature group is Lynn Kalinauskas, NCTA, University of Colorado Boulder, who specializes in modern Chinese literature.

This two-week course will be conducted entirely through asynchronous online discussions with fellow teachers and the course instructor. Course assignments include film viewing, short story reading, and several short background readings. Participants will have online access to all materials. Additional resources will also be provided.
