Depopulation and Degrowth in Japan, post-1990

Join us for the opportunity to meet with the University of Washington’s Justin Jesty, Associate Professor in Asian Languages and Literature who will introduce how Japan’s shrinking population and low-growth economy affect contemporary society. We will learn about trends since the 1990s and forecasts for the future, with particular attention to how they impact different places, industries, and age groups differently. We will also learn about efforts to mitigate the impacts of depopulation and degrowth and discuss how they might affect the way people think about values and life courses. Finally, we will discuss the role of Japan’s restrictive immigration policy.
