Walking the Tōkaidō: A Multi-Disciplinary Experience
|Start Date:||January 25, 2021|
|End Date:||April 12, 2021|
|Type of Course:||Online Seminars and Workshops|
|Audience:||Limited to 20 participants. Must be a K-12 classroom teacher, media or other specialist, or administrator.|
|Course Description:||Learn about the history, culture, and geography of Japan through a study of the Tōkaidō road. The project has an optional walking/running/cycling (your choice of one or more) component of just over 300 miles, to be completed over 12 weeks. Why not combat the winter blues while you learn about Japanese history and culture? You'll unlock virtual postcards as you "walk" from Tokyo to Kyoto using the MyVirtualMission platform. Don't worry, we're making provisions for those who choose not to walk to participate fully.
Participants will receive books and other materials for the seminar, and will participate in moderated online forum discussions each week. Participants will be asked to provide feedback on the materials used in the seminar as we prepare to launch a self-guided study program for teachers and students. The expected time commitment is 3-5 hours per week plus the optional walking/running/cycling time.
At the successful completion of the seminar participants will receive a $150 stipend and a certificate of completion for 40 contact hours.
