Sake, Sushi and Soft Power

Start Date: February 28, 2017
End Date: February 28, 2017
Time Detail: 7-8pm EST
Location: Online
Type of Course: Simulcasts and Webinars
Course Description: In the past decades, Japanese food has truly become a globalized product. The Shinzo Abe administration promotes Japanese cuisine as a part of its Cool Japan campaign, and washoku (traditional Japanese food) was recently certified by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage. Interestingly, despite common beliefs about historical Japanese isolation, there are many regional and global influences on what we consider "Japanese" food. This webinar will explore Japanese food as cultural amalgamations of regional influence as well as examine the global soft power reach of those same products.
