The Forbidden Temptation of Baseball, is a middle-grade novel for readers 10 to 14 and takes place in New England in 1875-6. At age 11, Woo Ka-Leong (known to his American friends as Leon) arrives in Connecticut as part of a group of 120 boys sent by the emperor on the (real historical) Chinese Educational Mission to the United States. Impulsive and curious, Leon gets in trouble more than once as he tries to adapt to American life. Warned by his government not to become "too American," he learns to love trains and baseball. But his elder brother, steeped in traditional Chinese ways, has a harder time adjusting.
Dori will talk about researching and writing this book and looks forward to a discussion of the challenges of teaching American kids to accept foreigners and immigrants in our classrooms and society. She is planning a book tour to Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York October 12 - 31, hoping to do as many school visits as possible. Contact Dori at firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like her to visit your school. www.booksbydori.com.
